Samson

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(sun) (Judg. 13:24)—son of Manoah and judge of Israel for twenty years. The circumstances surrounding his birth were extraordinary; see Manoah. Contrary to the wishes of his law-observant parents, Samson desired a Philistine woman of Timnah. While traveling there with them, a young lion came against him; the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore it as one would tear a kid, though he had nothing in his hand (Judg. 14:6). Later he found a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass, ate some, and brought some to his parents.
