(Acts 20:15)—an island of the Aegean Sea near the coast of Lydia in Asia Minor, between eighty and one hundred Roman miles in circumference according to the source. Its chief city bore the same name. Pythagoras was born there, a vast temple was dedicated to the pagan goddess Hera, and the inhabitants were famed for pottery. Saint Paul passed the island while sailing from Troas to Miletus. In the source’s day it was called Susam-Adassi, and its chief settlement was described as poor.
