(Exod. 1:15-22)—one of the two Hebrew midwives, with Puah, whom Pharaoh ordered to kill every newborn Hebrew boy. The midwives feared God and preserved the children alive. When questioned, they said that the Hebrew women gave birth before a midwife arrived. God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied. Pharaoh then commanded all his people to cast every newborn Hebrew son into the Nile while allowing the daughters to live.
