Ship
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Gen 49:13) - ship and haven of ships first occur in Jacob's blessing of Zebulun: 'Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.' The Hebrews themselves were never inclined toward sea voyages and enterprises. Their trade with distant lands passed chiefly overland or through other peoples more disposed to navigation. Even in their best period they kept no permanent fleet, ordinarily using small fishing boats along the Mediterranean coast or upon the Sea of Galilee. These craft were small and roughly built and, as the Gospels show, often endangered by violent storms on the lake.
