Socoh, or Socho

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—the name of two towns in Judah. (1) (Josh. 15:48) a town in Judah’s hill country south of Hebron, tentatively identified by the source with Shuweikeh. (2) (Josh. 15:35; 1 Sam. 17:1) a town in the Shephelah near Azekah, where the Philistines assembled before David’s victory over Goliath. One of Solomon’s district officers administered Socoh and the surrounding region (1 Kings 4:10), and Rehoboam fortified it (2 Chron. 11:7). The two locations and their proposed modern identifications should not be confused.
