—one of the ancient cities of the plain in the Valley of Siddim. Its king Bera joined the neighboring kings in revolt against Chedorlaomer; after their defeat Lot was taken captive, but Abraham rescued him and the people of Sodom (Gen. 14). The well-watered plain had appeared to Lot like the garden of the LORD, and he settled near Sodom, although its inhabitants were exceedingly wicked (Gen. 13:10–13).
