Solomon
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(peaceable)—son of David and Bathsheba and third king of united Israel. The encyclopedia follows a traditional chronology that places his birth about 1033 BC. The prophet Nathan called him Jedidiah, “beloved of the LORD” (2 Sam. 12:24–25). Solomon grew up under Nathan’s care and was chosen by David to succeed him. When Adonijah attempted to seize the throne with the support of Joab and Abiathar, Nathan and Bathsheba informed the aged king. David ordered Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah to anoint Solomon at Gihon, and the people acclaimed him king (1 Kings 1).
