Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 17:27)—a Greek coin worth four drachmas, equivalent in the Gospel’s setting to the shekel required for two persons’ Temple tax. Christ directed Peter to find the coin in the fish’s mouth and pay “for me and thee.” Staters could be struck in different metals and standards, but a silver coin is intended here.
