Talmai
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(“bold” or “furrowed”)—(1) king of Geshur and father of Maacah, one of David’s wives and mother of Absalom. After killing Amnon, Absalom fled to his grandfather Talmai and remained in Geshur for three years (2 Sam. 3:3; 13:37). (2) One of the three Anakim living at Hebron whom the spies saw in the land and whom Caleb later drove out (Num. 13:22; Josh. 15:14; Judg. 1:10). The narrative records Israel’s fear of the Anakim without requiring the source’s literalizing ethnological speculation about “giants.”
