Teacher

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—one who instructs. Greek translations of the Semitic titles Rabbi and Rabboni commonly use “Teacher” (John 1:38; 20:16). Jesus is addressed by this title and is confessed by his disciples as Teacher and Lord (John 13:13). He warns against seeking honorific titles as instruments of spiritual pride, because the Messiah is the Church’s definitive Teacher and all disciples stand as brothers and sisters before God (Matt. 23:7-10). The New Testament also recognizes a genuine ministry and gift of teaching within the Church.
