In the morning of the first day after the sabbath, now called Sunday, the evangelists relate, certain pious women went to the tomb of the Lord Jesus, to anoint His body with myrrh, which they had not had time to do at His burial. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for the Angel of the Lord descended and rolled away the stone from the tomb. The guards, terrified by his appearance, fled. The Angel addressed the pious women: “Fear not: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matt. 28:1–12). The myrrh-bearing women found the tomb open and found in it only the Lord’s grave-clothes. The risen Savior, following this, on the myrrh-bearers’ way back, appeared to them, and afterward appeared to many people many times. He appeared to the apostles over the course of 40 days, continuing to teach them the mysteries of the Kingdom of God (Matt. 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20 and 21; Acts 1:3); to Thomas, who doubted His resurrection, He even allowed to touch His wounds.
By His resurrection from the dead, the Lord Jesus Christ laid the foundation also for our own blessed resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20). A prophetic image of the Lord’s resurrection is presented in the Book of the Prophet Jonah, who was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights (Jonah 2:1).
