(See Biblical Chronology.) In Holy Scripture various hours of the day are mentioned, such as: a) Dawn — the time before the appearance of the sun. At this time the Lord rose (Mark 16:2; Matt. 28:1); b) Sunrise (2 Sam. 23:4 [as given]); c) the heat of the day (Gen. 18:1) — about 9 o’clock in the morning, the hottest time of day; d) noon (Gen. 43:16); e) the cool of the day — the time before sunset (Gen. 3:8). The Persians to this day call this part of the day by such a name; f) evening.
The Hebrews reckoned two evenings; the first began around the third hour, and the second around the fifth hour in the afternoon. The Savior gave up the ghost on the cross at the beginning of the first evening, and was taken down from the cross at the beginning of the second. The difference between the longest day (June 21 or 22) and the shortest day (December 21 or 22) in Palestine amounts to four hours and several minutes. The first lasts about 14 hours and 10 minutes, and the second 9 hours and 50 minutes.
