Tripolis
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(2 Macc. 14:1)—the important Phoenician coastal city north of Sidon, at the foot of the Lebanon range. Its name, “three cities,” reflects its association with the communities of Tyre, Sidon, and Arvad. The modern city of Tripoli lies partly beyond the ancient settlement and remains a major Lebanese port.
