Washing of the Disciples’ Feet

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(John 13:1-20)—during the meal before Passover, Jesus rose from the table, laid aside his outer garment, tied a towel around himself, poured water into a basin, and began washing and drying the disciples’ feet. He performed the work of a servant while fully conscious that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was returning to God. His humility therefore reveals, rather than contradicts, his divine mission and love.
