Wilderness of Zin

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(low, flat place; Num. 13:21; 20:1; 27:14; 33:36; 34:3-4; Deut. 32:51; Josh. 15:3)—a wilderness at the southern edge of Canaan near Kadesh and the border of Edom. The spies began their survey from this region. Israel later returned to Kadesh in Zin, where the people quarreled at the waters of Meribah and Moses was told that he would not enter the promised land. Zin must be distinguished from the Wilderness of Sin nearer Sinai, though older Russian forms sometimes blur the names.
