(Judg. 12:1; Josh. 13:27)—a city east of the Jordan, probably south of the Sea of Galilee, in the territory assigned to Gad. After Jephthah’s victory over the Ammonites, the Ephraimites assembled against him there, complaining that he had gone to battle without them and threatening to burn his house. Civil war followed, and forty-two thousand Ephraimites were slain (Judg. 12:1–6).
