Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(dwellers in desolate places) — an ancient Canaanite people, mentioned in Deuteronomy 2:23 and in Joshua 13:3, who lived in villages as far as Gaza and, after being driven out from there by the Caphtorim, occupied various parts of Palestine. It is thought that the Hivites, often mentioned in Holy Scripture, are one and the same as the Avvites.
