(oppressed) (Josh. 15:31; 1 Sam. 27:6)—a city at the southern end of Judah’s territory, though originally assigned to Simeon. In Saul’s time it belonged to the Philistines, and Achish their king temporarily gave it to David while David fled from Saul. During David’s absence the Amalekites burned the city and took the women and children captive. David pursued and defeated them with God’s help and recovered all the spoil (1 Sam. 30). David received the news of Saul’s death there (2 Sam. 1:1). The source places its ruins at Asluj or Kasluj, east of Zephath, southeast of Halas, and about sixty English miles southwest of Hebron.
