Ziphites

(1 Sam. 23:19) — inhabitants of the city and wilderness of Ziph, near the wilderness of Maon and Mount Carmel, notable for their hypocrisy toward David during his sojourn in this wilderness. They feigned friendship toward him, while twice betraying his whereabouts to Saul, thereby exposing him to great danger, from which he escaped the first time quite by chance, and the second time only through the shame and repentance of Saul himself. Psalm 54 [53], written by David on the occasion of his first deliverance from this danger, glorifies God for His help and His mercies toward him.
