Zoan (Tanis)

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Num. 13:22; Pss. 78:12, 43)—an ancient city in the northeastern Nile Delta. Numbers says that Zoan was built seven years after Hebron. It became an important royal and administrative center and is called Tanis in Judith 1:10. Its ruins lie at modern San el-Hagar. The source’s citations to Exodus are printer’s errors for Isaiah 19:11, 13 and 30:4.
