Anathoth

(answer to prayer) — a Levitical city of the tribe of Benjamin, situated a few miles north of Jerusalem. It was the birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 1:1) and the subject of one of his prophecies (Jer. 11:19–22); Isaiah too prophesied concerning it (Isa. 10:30). Abiathar was banished by Solomon to Anathoth. The sons of Benjamin lived there after the captivity (Neh. 11:32). On the site of the ancient city there is now, according to the English traveler Robinson, a village called Anata, an hour and a quarter’s journey northeast of Jerusalem, consisting of several wretched huts whose inhabitants are very poor. Not far from this village, however, are quarries of building stone, which is exported from here in sufficient quantity to Jerusalem.
