Carchemish, or Charchemish

(city of Chemosh) (2 Chr 35:20; Jer 46:2; Isa 10:9 and elsewhere) - a city near the Euphrates that guarded an important crossing of the river. For more than a century between Sargon's capture of it and Pharaoh Necho's attack, its history is obscure; during that period it probably passed more than once under the power of neighboring peoples, since Ethiopia, Egypt, Assyria, and Babylonia were then at the height of their strength. Carchemish appears in both Egyptian and Assyrian hieroglyphic inscriptions.
Egyptian records associate its people with the Hittites, whose chief city was Kadesh near Emesa, while Assyrian records describe Carchemish as the capital of the northern Hittites.
