Aram, Aramea

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(highland country) (Gen. 24:10; 25:10) — under this name is generally meant Syria, in the sense not of Syria alone, but of Syria and Mesopotamia together. This is an elevated plateau, 2,000 feet above sea level, extending from the sources of the Jordan to the Euphrates. The word Aram is often joined with other words, as for instance Aram-maachah, Aram-hamath [as given], Aram-naharaim, and signifies Syria together with certain other kingdoms belonging to it in antiquity.
