Daughter

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 24:48) — a word used not only to denote direct female offspring, but also to signify female descendants generally. It is also used to mean woman in general (Gen. 6:2; Luke 23:28), to denote women given to idolatry (1 Sam. 1:16), and to denote secondary towns dependent on other cities (2 Sam. 20:19; Ps. 137:8 [136:8]). Among the Hebrews generally it was customary to call towns and their populations “daughters” or “virgins” (Matt. 21:5).
