Rebekah Rebecca

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(bond; captivating by beauty) (Gen. 24:15)—the sister of Laban and wife of Isaac. The circumstances of her marriage to Isaac form one of the Bible’s most beautiful and moving narratives (Gen. 24). See Isaac. After twenty years of marriage she became the mother of Esau and Jacob and received a remarkable divine revelation concerning their future. When the sons grew, Jacob became his mother’s favorite; the source observes that this excessive partiality became the cause of many family troubles. See Jacob. Rebekah died before Isaac and was buried in the cave of Machpelah with Abraham and Sarah, and where Isaac and Leah were also buried.
