Aristobulus

(excellent counselor) — the name of the following persons: a) (2 Macc. 1:10) son and successor of John Hyrcanus; b) Aristobulus II, son of King Alexander Jannaeus, brother of Aristobulus I, who waged a civil war with his brother Hyrcanus for the right to the throne of Judea, and thereby placed Judea under the power of the Romans (64 B.C.); c) Aristobulus III, grandson of Aristobulus II, the last high priest of the Hasmonean line, drowned by Herod’s servants in a pool where he was bathing with them; d) (Rom. 16:10) a resident of Rome. In the passage cited, some of his household are greeted by the Apostle Paul. The Greek menologion counts him among the Seventy and says that he preached the Gospel in Britain. His memory is January 4 and March 16.
