Ashtaroth

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Josh. 9:10), — called Ashteroth-karnaim in the Book of Deuteronomy (1:4) [as given] — was one of the chief cities of Og, king of Bashan. From here came Uzzia [as given], one of David’s thirty mighty men (1 Chron. 11:44). The name Tell Ashtereh, it seems, has been retained to this day for a certain place lying six Roman miles from Edrei. Others think it identical with the more recent settlement Mezareib, situated on the route of pilgrims traveling from Damascus to Mecca.
