Assos, Assa

(Acts 20:13, 14) (captive) — a city and harbor in Mysia, on the shore of the Aegean Sea, below Troas, opposite the island of Lesbos. The Apostle Paul, on his way back to Jerusalem for the last time after his third journey, went here on foot from Troas and from there sailed to Mytilene. A chief feature of Assos was the absence of any Roman element in it: it was an entirely Greek city. The remains of the city, built for the most part of granite, are very numerous and well preserved, such as, for instance, the citadel, situated on the ruins of the theater. The street of tombs, leading to the great gate, was reckoned the most beautiful street of the city of Assos.
