Emim

(terrible, dreadful ones — hence: giants) (Gen. 14:5; Deut. 2:10–11) — a tall-statured people who dwelt in Moab and near the Arnon, east of the Jordan and the Dead Sea. From the second passage cited it appears that the land of the Ammonites was given into the possession of the children of Lot, that is, the Moabites, while verses 20–21 state that before the Moabites occupied it, the Rephaim, “a people great, and many, and tall,” dwelt there. It is entirely unknown of what origin this people was.
In the opinion of M. de Corbeau, they belonged to the tribe of Shasu, whose images are found on Egyptian monuments. From the passage cited above, however, it is evident that the Emim, or Rephaim, had already been exterminated by the time of Moses.
