Baal-berith

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Baal of the covenant) (Judg. 8:33; 9:4, 46). Under this name the inhabitants of Shechem, after Gideon’s death, worshiped Baal. The name signifies “the covenant of Baal,” for the reason that those who served him considered themselves to have entered into a covenant with this idol. However, nothing is known of the particulars that attended the service of Baal-berith.

Scripture cited

Judges 8:33
