Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(son of contention, from Bel-Adad, national deity of the Edomites) (Job 2:11; 8:1; 18:1, and elsewhere) — one of Job’s three friends, a Shuhite, that is, belonging to an Arabian tribe descended from Shuah, son of Abraham by Keturah (Gen. 25:2). He came together with the other friends to visit the much-suffering Job, but instead of comforting him with his words only increased his soul’s sorrow. In chapter 8 he ascribes all of Job’s misfortunes to the justice of God for his own sins and the sins of his children.
In chapter 18 he accuses Job of impatience, and enumerates in detail the calamities that fall upon the heads of sinners, reckoning Job among the latter. In chapter 25, as though in answer to Job’s justifications, he brings forward the arguments that testify that no one can be considered pure before God.
