(“south country”)—(1) a son of Eliphaz, Esau’s firstborn, and a grandson of Esau (Gen. 36:11, 15; 1 Chron. 1:36). A chief named Teman also appears in the list of Edomite clans (Gen. 36:42; 1 Chron. 1:53). (2) A district or town of Edom, associated especially with Edomite wisdom (Jer. 49:7; Obad. 8-9). Eliphaz, Job’s friend, is called a Temanite (Job 2:11; 4:1). Its exact site is uncertain, and the name may sometimes denote a broader southern or eastern region of Edom.
