Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(stronghold) — the name of a city and of a person: a) a city belonging to the tribe of Reuben (Josh. 21:36), east of the Jordan. According to Eusebius, it was one of the cities of refuge (Deut. 4:41, 43), and along with its surrounding lands was given, among others, to the Levites. It was also called Bezer in the wilderness, and by the Septuagint: Bosor; b) a descendant of Asher (1 Chron. 7:37), one of the chief leaders among the descendants of Asher.
