Caesarea Philippi

(Matt 16:13; Mark 8:27) - a Palestinian town near Mount Hermon at the eastern source of the Jordan, anciently called Paneas. The site was probably once dedicated to the god Pan; an inscription preserved among the ruins said that a temple there had been devoted to him. Later the city belonged to the tetrarch Philip, who greatly enlarged it and named it Caesarea Philippi to distinguish it from Caesarea on the coast. Herod Agrippa further embellished it and called it Neronias in Nero's honor, though that name did not last.
