Caiaphas

(probably Aramaic for humility; according to others, investigator) (Matt 26:3; John 11:49) - the Jewish high priest during the Lord's public ministry, sufferings, and death. Josephus gives his full name as Joseph Caiaphas. Annas, or Ananus, was his father-in-law and apparently shared authority with him in an irregular manner. Soon after Pontius Pilate was removed from the government of Judea, Caiaphas also lost the high priesthood, about AD 36, and Jonathan replaced him. Some church writers confused him with the historian Josephus because of a similarity of names, supposing that he later became a Christian, but the source considers this improbable.
