Commander of a Thousand

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Deut. 1:15)—an Israelite military or administrative leader set over a unit conventionally called a thousand. Commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens formed a graduated structure of leadership, though the Hebrew numbers can sometimes describe social or clan groupings rather than an exact battlefield count. David consulted commanders of thousands and hundreds as representatives of military leadership (1 Chron. 13:1).
