Hormah

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(devoted to destruction; Num. 14:45; 21:3; Deut. 1:44; Josh. 12:14; 15:30; Judg. 1:17)—a town or district in the southern Negeb near Edom. After Israel presumptuously attempted to enter the land without Moses and the ark, Amalekites and Canaanites defeated them as far as Hormah. Later, after the king of Arad attacked Israel, the LORD gave the Canaanites into Israel’s hand; their cities were devoted to destruction, and the place received the name Hormah. Hormah and Arad were probably neighboring places. See Arad.
