Curse

(Gen. 27:12). In biblical usage this word stands opposite to blessing. A curse therefore signifies the withdrawal of blessing and condemnation to calamity. The first curse was pronounced by God after the fall of the first human beings: “Cursed is the ground for thy sake,” God said in Paradise to sinful Adam (Gen. 3:17). God also pronounced a curse upon Cain (Gen. 4:11), and the earth with all who lived upon it came under judgment in the Flood in the days of Noah (Gen. 6:7; 7:21–23).
