(Lev. 19:28)—incisions made on the body in mourning or cultic frenzy. The prophets of Baal cut themselves with swords and lances until blood flowed during their contest with Elijah (1 Kings 18:28). Israel was forbidden to cut the body or make tattoo marks for the dead and was also forbidden to shave the forehead as a mourning rite (Lev. 19:28; Deut. 14:1). Priests faced additional restrictions concerning contact with the dead, shaving, and bodily cuttings (Lev. 21:1-6). The prohibitions distinguish Israel’s worship and hope from rites that harmed the body in service of the dead or other gods.
