Old Age

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Job 15:10)—the closing season of earthly life. The law commands reverence before the gray head (Lev. 19:32), and Scripture often treats length of days as a blessing (Job 5:26; Ps. 128:6). Gray hair is “a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness” (Prov. 16:31), while the strength of youth and the beauty of old men each have their proper honor (Prov. 20:29). Zechariah’s vision of restored Jerusalem includes aged men and women sitting safely in its streets (Zech. 8:4).
