Gedaliah

(great is the Lord): a) (Jer. 35:4) a man of God, father of Hanan, whose sons had a chamber in the Jerusalem Temple; b) (Jer. 39:14; 40:5, 9, and elsewhere) son of Ahikam, appointed by Nebuchadnezzar to govern Palestine after its conquest and the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple (2 Kings 25:22). He extended his protection to the prophet Jeremiah after his release from bonds (Jer. 40:1–6). Soon after, at the instigation of the king of the Ammonites, he was treacherously slain by Ishmael, one of the Jewish military commanders.
The details of this event are related in chapters 41 and 44 [as given] of the book of the prophet Jeremiah; c) (Jer. 38:1–13) son of Pashhur, of the nobles under King Zedekiah, who sought to put the prophet Jeremiah to death for his stern denunciations and prophecies (Jer. 38:1–13).
