a) (Judg. 3:12–30) name of a king of Moab, who held the Israelites under his yoke for eighteen years. He entered into alliance with the Ammonites and took possession of the City of Palm Trees — Jericho — where he established his residence, and where he was afterward slain by Ehud. Of Eglon it is said in the book of Judges (3:17) that he was a very fat man, so that the sword which the judge Ehud thrust into his belly could not be drawn out again. After Eglon’s death, the Moabites who dwelt on the other side of the Jordan were all given over to destruction (v. 29).
