Eglath-shelishiyah

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Isa. 15:5; Jer. 48:34)—literally “the third Eglah,” or, in some traditional renderings, “a heifer three years old.” Some interpreters treated the expression figuratively as describing Zoar or Horonaim as young, unbroken, and free; it is more likely a place-name for a settlement in southern Moab, near Edom and not far from Zoar. Its exact location and the reason for the designation “third” remain uncertain.
