Euergetes

(benefactor) — a general title and honorary designation in the Greek states, so widely known that it even passed into a proverb: “and they that exercise authority upon them [the nations] are called benefactors,” said the Lord (Luke 22:25). This title was borne by two Ptolemies: Ptolemy III (247–222 B.C.) and Ptolemy VII (146–117 B.C.). One of them is mentioned in the preface to the book of the Wisdom of Jesus, Son of Sirach — namely, that this book was translated into Greek by the grandson of Jesus, son of Sirach, the younger Jesus, during his stay in Egypt in the days of Ptolemy Euergetes, king of Egypt. But which Ptolemy, the third or the seventh, is meant here is not known.
