Fishhook Have Do

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Isa. 19:8; Hab. 1:15)—a hook attached to line and, ordinarily, a rod for catching fish. Isaiah’s judgment on Egypt includes the mourning of those who cast hooks into the Nile and spread nets upon the waters, because the river’s failure destroys a major source of food and livelihood. Habakkuk uses fishing gear metaphorically for an empire gathering peoples like fish and rejoicing in conquest.
