Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(John 19:13) — a Hebrew word, denoting an elevated place or platform, in the manner of a judge’s tribunal in present-day courts. The floor of this stone platform was paved with variegated stones in mosaic work, as was generally customary among the Romans and Hebrews in palaces and public buildings. Hence in Greek it is called Lithostroton [Pavement]. Mosaic paving was generally in use among the Romans. This platform was situated outside the praetorium, for Pilate, before pronouncing sentence, brought Jesus Christ out of the praetorium to this tribunal.
