Scripture describes Christ’s seamless tunic but gives no physical portrait (John 19:23–24). The earliest Christian art often used symbols—the cross, anchor, fish, lamb, shepherd, vine, ship, and dove—alongside developing representations of Christ. Later tradition associates the image not made by hands with King Abgar of Edessa and the Mandylion, and another tradition speaks of Veronica’s veil on the way to Golgotha. Eusebius also reports seeing at Caesarea Philippi a bronze group locally associated with the woman healed of the flow of blood (Ecclesiastical History 7.18). These are venerable ecclesiastical traditions, not descriptions supplied by the canonical Gospels.
