Gebal

(bald, hairless) a) See Gerizim. Now among the Arabs, Gebal is called Imad-ed-Deba, meaning “pillar of Deba.” b) (Ps. 83:8 [82:7]) the name of a locality or people, probably hostile to Israel, mentioned in the list of its enemies. c) (Ezek. 27:9) a Phoenician city 20 English miles north of Beirut, called by the Greeks and Romans Byblos, and now the village of Jebeil, representing nothing but ruins. In the days of Tyre’s prosperity and might, the city was famous for shipbuilding. Solomon in particular employed the inhabitants of Gebal in the building of the Jerusalem Temple (1 Kings 5:18).
