Sisera

(order of battle)—the name of two persons. (1) (Judg. 4:2–5:31) commander of the army of Jabin king of Hazor and the first military commander named in the Bible during this period of Israel’s wars. His large and well-equipped force included nine hundred iron chariots, while Barak’s smaller army consisted of infantry. With miraculous help from above and through the overflowing torrent Kishon, Barak routed Sisera’s host. Sisera abandoned his chariot and fled on foot to the tent of Heber the Kenite, where Jael, Heber’s wife, killed him. Deborah and Barak praised God in song for the deliverance. The event remained long in Israel’s memory (1 Sam. 12:9; Ps. 83:9–10).
