Gemariah

(the Lord is the accomplisher) — the name of two persons: a) (Jer. 29:1–3) son of Hilkiah, probably one of the important officials of King Zedekiah. In 597 B.C. he was sent by King Zedekiah to Nebuchadnezzar, in Babylon, and delivered to the Jewish captives in Babylon a letter to them from the prophet Jeremiah. b) (Jer. 36:10, 12, 25) son of the scribe Shaphan (2 Kings 22:3), father of Micaiah, who lived in a separate chamber of the Jerusalem Temple. He urged King Jehoiakim not to burn the scroll written by the prophet Baruch, but to read it, as Jeremiah had commanded.
But neither the king nor any of his servants gave thought to amending their ways; they did not heed his exhortations, and the whole scroll was destroyed: after Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the fire in the brazier (Jer. 36:28).
